To Immunize or Not to Immunize
“Vaccines are one of the greatest public health achievements of the past century,” says Dr. Joanne Langley, a pediatric infectious-disease expert at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. “They are one of the key factors in maintaining health and preventing disease.” There is always a very small risk of developing problems after immunization, but in answer to those who fear a connection with autism, Langley says emphatically that “there is no evidence of a link between any vaccine and this condition.”
She points out that all vaccines undergo an extremely rigorous process of testing before approval and are so safe that they are administered by public health nurses in routine inoculation programs. “The benefits greatly outweigh the risks,” she says.
